CAIRO, May 20 (Xinhua) -- China and the Arab League pledged to deepen their cooperation in fighting the COVID-19 pandemic, said a statement published Friday by the Chinese embassy in Egypt.

The two sides made the remarks during a meeting held Thursday in Cairo between Chinese Ambassador to Egypt Liao Liqiang and Haifa Abu Ghazaleh, Arab League (AL) Assistant Secretary General for Social Affairs.

"Since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, China and Arab countries have stood together and helped each other," said the Chinese ambassador, noting "the traditional friendship and strategic partnership between China and Arab countries have been constantly deepened and enhanced."

China stands ready to continue working with Arab countries to combat the pandemic, and build a community of a shared future for China and the Arab countries as well as a community of common health for the two sides through cooperation in fighting the COVID-19 pandemic, said Liao.

He also highlighted China's dynamic zero-COVID policy, which has ensured not only the steady development of China's economy, but also the security of the global industrial and supply chains, bringing benefits to the world.

"We have full confidence in overcoming the tough battle against the epidemic, and making greater contribution to the global victory over the disease at an early date," stressed Liao.

For her part, Abu Ghazaleh expressed the AL's gratitude to the Chinese side for providing large amounts of medical aid and vaccines for Arab countries.

She noted that the COVID-19 pandemic is still raging globally as the spread of the Omicron variant has intensified the challenges facing the world, adding that the AL is willing to continue cooperation and communication with China closely to fight the pandemic.

The AL will adhere to the resolution adopted by the Council of Arab Ministers for Health in February 2020 to express its appreciation and support for China's anti-pandemic efforts, said the AL official.
