Egypt urges calm in Lebanon after deadly shooting

15 Oct 2021, 04:05 GMT+10

CAIRO, Oct. 14 (Xinhua) -- Egypt expressed on Thursday its "great concern" over the deadly shooting that took place in Lebanon earlier in the day, urging all Lebanese parties to maintain calm and self-restraint, according to a statement by the Egyptian Foreign Ministry.

Egypt called on the Lebanese to refrain from violence, prioritize Lebanon's higher interests and stick to the constitution and the law "in a manner that protects the country's stability and security, preserves the resources of its people and takes them out of the cycle of vicious crises," said the ministry's spokesman Ahmed Hafez in the statement.

Earlier on Thursday, at least six people were killed and more than 30 others wounded in a shooting in Lebanon's capital Beirut, according to the Lebanese Red Cross, during a protest held by Iran-backed Hezbollah and its ally Amal Movement that accused the judge investigating last year's Beirut explosions of bias.

Hezbollah and Amal accused the Lebanese Forces (LF) party of being behind the shooting, but the LF leader Samir Geagea denied the charges and condemned the shooting.

The Egyptian Foreign Ministry urged the Lebanese government and institutions to assume their responsibilities in running the country, resolving its crises and restoring stability "so that the international community can help Lebanon move forward toward a better future."
