CAIRO, May 17 (Xinhua) -- Israel and Palestine need "an immediate restoration of clam and an end to violence and murder," Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi said Monday, as the one-week deadly conflicts have killed more than 200 people.
"Egypt did and will continue to exert efforts to end the conflicts. Hope always remains to settle the violence," the Presidency said in a statement posted on Facebook.
Tensions started in Jerusalem last month and expanded to the West Bank and the Gaza Strip amid outrage of a forced evacuation of Palestinians from their home in Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood in East Jerusalem.
Situation further escalated on May 10 after Hamas, which rules the Gaza Strip, set an ultimatum for Israel to withdraw its forces from the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound, where hundreds of Palestinians were injured in clashes with Israeli police.
Hamas said at least 197 Palestinians were killed, including 58 children, in the Israeli airstrikes. Israel said 10 Israelis were killed and more than 100 injured by rockets fired by Palestinian militants.
