BEIJING, Sept. 24 (Xinhua) -- Chinese stocks closed lower Thursday, tracking overnight declines on the Wall Street, with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index down 1.72 percent at 3,223.18 points.
The Shenzhen Component Index closed 2.24 percent lower at 12,816.61 points.
The combined turnover of stocks covered by the two indexes expanded slightly to 679.31 billion yuan (about 99.9 billion U.S. dollars) from 660.75 billion yuan the previous trading day.
Most stocks fell Thursday, with losers outnumbering gainers by 1,337 to 100 at the Shanghai bourse, and by 2,081 to 174 in Shenzhen.
Bucking the downward trend, shares related to retail businesses and agriculture industry went higher, with the sectors gaining 1.65 percent and 1.02 percent respectively.
The Heilongjiang Agriculture Company Ltd. climbed 2.05 percent to 18.94 yuan per share. The Xinjiang Talimu Agriculture Development Co., Ltd. rose 1.16 percent to 9.58 yuan.
Overnight, the S&P 500 Index fell 2.37 percent to close at 3,236.92 points, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 26,763.13 points, down 1.92 percent.
The ChiNext Index, China's NASDAQ-style board of growth enterprises, lost 2.46 percent to close at 2,535.87 points Thursday.
