Asian stocks weaker, Japan's Nikkei 225 down 259 points

SYDNEY, NSW, Australia - It was all red ink in Asia on Thursday as all the major indices declined.

In Tokyo, Japan, the Nikkei 225 fell 258.67 points or 1.11% to 23,087.82.

The Australian All Ordinaries was off 54.80 points or 0.90% at 6,056.50.

in Hong Kong, the Hang Seng was hard hit. The key index closed down 431.44 points or 1.82% to 23,311.07 Thursday.

China's Shanghai Composite declined 56.63 points or 1.72% to 3,223.18.

On foreign exchange markets the relentless run higher for the greenback continued. The euro was pushed down to 1.1653 around the Sydney close on Thursday.

The British pound fell to 1.2693. The Japanese yen was soft at 105.30, while the Swiss franc dived to 0.9238.

The Canadian dollar weakened to 1.3410. The Australian dollar eased to 0.7035, while the New Zealand dollar fell to 0.6627.

Overnight on Wall Street, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was down 525.05 points, or 1.92%, at 26,763.13.

The Standard and Poor's 500 fell 78.65 points, or 2.37%, to 3,236.92.

The Nasdaq Composite plummeted 330.65 points, or 3.02%, to 10,632.99.
